AIKO Kyu and DAN Grading Prerequisites (01-2020 Revision)

Grading Prerequisites

From the first of january 2020 the following Rules and Requirements are effective and you are obligated to follow these Rules and Requirements

This document states the Rules and Requirements regarding gradings. This document will give an overview of the minimal requirements that is to be upheld so we can guarantee the quality of grades within our organisation. All higher grade applications will be registered and will be scrutinised against the regulations. After application is done and before the mentioned exam date a candidate will be informed when he or she can’t do an exam or what the requirements will be during the exam.

  • Kyu grades until 5th Kyu can be done in the Dojo or on Camps/Seminars and require at least a Shodan to grade
  • Kyu grades until 3rd Kyu can be done in the Dojo or on Camps/Seminars and require at least a Nidan to grade
  • 2nd and 1st Kyu and Dangradings need to be done on a camp/seminar and need at least a SanDan to grade
  • 4th Kyu and above need to make a application to perform the exam, this application needs to be approved by the AIKO Board (No application no exam)

Lifetime membership:

  • From 4th Kyu you need to have a lifetime membership, meaning if you want to do an examination for 4th kyu and higher, you need to be registered and have a lifetime membership. You get a Membership card and number and a Passport were you can register your gradings, seminars and camps. Costs are 25 euros / 28 dollars. Durations:

Kyu Exams:

  • From 4th Kyu to 3rd Kyu the minimum required training time is 6 months, application is required – https://wp.me/P8nCp2-8Z
  • From 3rd Kyu to 2nd Kyu the minimum required training time is 6 months, application is required – https://wp.me/P8nCp2-8Z
  • From 2nd Kyu to 1st Kyu the minimum required training time is 1 year, application is required – https://wp.me/P8nCp2-8Z
  • Deviations may occur by the discretion of the style leader Shihan Dave Jonkers

Shodan exam:

  • From 1st Kyu to Shodan the minimum required training time is 1 year
  • You need to be at least 18 years of age
  • You need to be practising martial arts for at least 8 years
  • You need to have a lifetime membership
  • Costs are 160 euro / 175 dollars 
  • Shodan examinations can only be done during Camps, Seminars or by approval of Shihan Dave Jonkers and under his supervision.
  • Deviations may occur by the discretion of the style leader Shihan Dave Jonkers
  • A Dan grade / Higher kyu grade grade applications is required – https://wp.me/P8nCp2-8Z

Nidan exam:

  • From Shodan to Nidan the minimum required training time is 3 years
  • You need to be at least 22 years of age
  • You need to be practising martial arts for at least 10 years
  • You need to have a lifetime membership
  • Costs are 160 euro / 175 dollars 
  • Nidan examinations can only be done during Camps, Seminars or by approval of Shihan Dave Jonkers and under his supervision. 
  • Deviations may occur by the discretion of the style leader Shihan Dave Jonkers
  • A Dan grade / Higher kyu grade grade applications is required – https://wp.me/P8nCp2-8Z

Sandan exam:

  • From Nidan to Sandan the minimum required training time is 5 years
  • You need to be at least 28 years of age
  • You need to be practising martial arts for at least 15 years
  • You need to have a lifetime membership
  • Costs are 160 euro / 175 dollars 
  • Sandan examinations can only be done during Camps, Seminars or by approval of Shihan Dave Jonkers and under his supervision. 
  • Deviations may occur by the discretion of the style leader Shihan Dave Jonkers
  • A Dan grade / Higher kyu grade grade applications is required – https://wp.me/P8nCp2-8Z
  • Promotions upwards of Sandan can only be done by Shihan Dave Jonkers time limits are not set for these yet.
  • People coming from other styles can receive a provisional grade, but also they are eligible to do a grading for their current grade to become a full recognised grade. To grow to a higher grade you need to do the exam for your current grade, this goes from 4th to Sandan.
  • Exceptions on the above mentioned Rules and Requirements can occur but only by the decision of Shihan Dave Jonkers.
